Our commitment to making a meaningful difference

Poverty undermines the potential of countless children and families by limiting their access to essential resources and opportunities.

Every year, during Anti-Poverty Week, we reaffirm our dedication to confronting poverty head-on by raising awareness, driving advocacy for systemic change, promoting strategies that address the root causes of poverty, and creating a deeper understanding of its impact.

Our annual event brings together diverse stakeholders, including policymakers, community leaders, practitioners, and those directly affected by poverty, to engage in meaningful dialogue and collaborative action.

We work to highlight the urgent need for comprehensive solutions and equitable policies that can make a meaningful difference.

Anti-Poverty Week 2024

This year’s event focused on reframing housing as a human right, with inspiring discussions centring around on housing insecurity and its impact on children, young people and families.

Key topics addressed included the implications of the Voice referendum on First Nations autonomy, the severe national housing crisis leaving 62,000 Victorians on the public housing waitlist, and the disproportionate effects on young people and Aboriginal families. Discussions highlighted systemic issues in housing and the need for responsive policies that protect vulnerable communities.

Commissioner for Residential Tenancies, Dr. Heather Holst, highlighted the need for longer leases and better tenant rights, while Juno CEO Tanya Corrie emphasised the gendered analysis of housing policy. Uniting Vic.Tas CEO Bronwyn Pike stressed the importance of storytelling and community engagement in advocating for housing as a human right.
