Switch to Social Work – The Journey Begins!
02 May 2024
Since the launch of the Switch to Social Work Program last year, we’ve seen remarkable progress! 67 participants were informed about their successful enrolment, indicating the beginning of their program journey.
Switch to Social Work is a two-year program, creating a new pathway for people who already have a bachelor’s degree but would like a career change. Combining study, training and paid work, the program is an innovative partnership between The Victorian Government, The Centre for Excellence in Child and Family Welfare, La Trobe University and community service organisations.

Support From 16 Community Service Organisations
In February, during enrolment day, we could feel the energy across the Bundoora, Bendigo and Mildura campuses. Now, only a few short months later, participants are well on their way, having completed approximately one-eighth of the total program duration and engaging in academic activities across various campuses of La Trobe University located in Bundoora, Bendigo, and Mildura.
We are delighted to see the strong support from the child and family sector, with 16 Community Service Organisations (CSOs) endorsing the program. These CSOs have generously pledged their commitment as Host Organisations, to provide tailored supervision and guidance to our 67 participants throughout the program, encompassing work experience, field placements, and employment in the program’s second year.
Currently, we’re almost at the end of the matching process, with our participants undergoing interviews with prospective Host Organisations. These pivotal connections mark the beginning of enduring relationships that will span the next two years, culminating in 30 days of invaluable work experience and two field placements. We’re thrilled to see some Host Organisations already confirming their selected participants for the next phase.
Practice Leaders
Happily, our participants come from across the state, from Melbourne, Geelong, Ballarat, Gippsland, Bendigo, Shepparton, Mildura and more! The cohort showcases the diversity of the Victorian community, with people of all ages and backgrounds embracing their futures as practice leaders.
The collaboration involved in the Switch to Social Work Program is a testament to the Centre’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of children and families. The Centre’s role doesn’t stop at the inception of the program, rather, it extends to ongoing support for the participants and the Host Organisations, ensuring they are well-equipped across the two years.
